At a time when we are so concerned about our health we do best by taking care of ourselves and following the directives of science. Hopefully CURES for our problems will come along. But what happens in simpler cultures which have no access to medical care? You would be surprised! Humans have instinctive feelings regarding what is good for them and what is not. The purpose of the Holistic Health Movement is to regain that mind-body connection that we have lost.
One example of an instinctively healthy expression is the American Black or Negro spiritual, Take for instance the hymn DEM DRY BONES. Just listen and see if it doesn’t lift your spirits as your focus moves up and down the body not only with words but tones. This hymn reminds anyone who practices Holistic Health of a very effective guided health visualization. It can move us naturally from discomfort to joy in just the few minutes it takes to sing and sway along.
This natural “tune-up” for the human energy system is is actually a well-known “tune” written by James Weldon Johnson. In the late 19th century Dem Dry Bones was popular song chosen by black ministers for funerals and other important occasions. It referred to the vision of prophet Ezekiel in the Old Testament as the skeletons are expected to rise from their graves at the Resurrection and become even better versions of the humans they had been.
Achieving wholeness and effective functioning is a positive human drive. Integration works for the health of a society as well as the individual. In the 60’s Dem Bones acted as a metaphor for the gathering the true activists and building the civil rights movement. This zippy tune has been recorded by many of the greats of American music: Fisk Jubilee Singers, The Delta Rhythm Boys, Fats Waller, and Albertina Walker to name a few.

James Weldon Johnson was born on a Saturday in the zodiac sign of Gemini. This makes Saturn the ruler of his INNER Self and gives Mercury rulership of his OUTER Self. James Weldon Johnson was an incredibly accomplished figure. His parents were from the Bahamas. He graduated from Clark Atlanta University, During the nineteen twenties he and his brother moved to New York City. Together they found success in great writing popular songs, forming musical ensembles and producing Broadway operettas. During this cultural period which he named the Harlem Renaissance, Johnson earned his reputation as a writer and a poet.
Johnson was appointed under President Theodore Roosevelt as US consul in Venezuela and Nicaragua for much of the period from 1906 to 1913. He served as the first leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1920 -30. In 1934 he became the first African-American professor to be hired at New York University. Toward the end of his life he taught creative writing at Fisk University, a historically black university.
Traditionally Saturn is given rulership of the skeletal system and James Weldon Johnson, who is one of Saturn’s Children, wrote the most famous song about bones. Dayologists come across these “coincidences” all the time and we take them to mean THAT “occurences” profound and beyond our everyday awareness are weaving themselves through the universe and our lives.
