Fred and Cindy Warmbier said, “We have been respectful during this summit process. Now we must speak out. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto.” They added ” No excuses or lavish praise can change that.” Their response was directed to our president’s attempt to overlook the torture that their son and U.S. citizen received at the hands of the North Koreans.
President Trump says that he takes the word of Kim Jung Un that he personally knew nothing about the maltreatment of this American prisoner. The fact that Trump sides with high profile authoritarian figures has become a noticeable pattern. World leaders are responsible for the wrong-doing of their nations. If a significant injustice occurs on their watch, they are expected to admit and correct the situation. And the prisons in North Korea are the worst in the world.
How did Otto Warmbier find himself imprisoned in North Korea? As a 22 year old University of Virginia student, he signed up for a study-abroad program in Hong Kong. Then he took a side trip to North Korea with Young Pioneer Tours travel group. As he departed from the Pyongyang airport he was stopped by security. He was charged with the crime of stealing a political poster from a restricted floor of his hotel. The act was clearly disrespectful but not deserving of what was to follow.
At his trial Warmbier admitted to the crime and begged for a release. He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor but was sent home after 17 months in a vegetative state. Supposedly he had slipped into a coma after contracting botulism and given a sleeping pill. A coroner’s report stated that Warmbier died from an unknown injury causing lack of oxygen to the brain. There is a possibility that he may have suffered electrocution. Warmbier remained consciousness and died several days after being brought home.
