The largest climate change demonstration took place yesterday. The bulk of the participants were under eighteen to the absolute astonishment of all.
While these youthful demonstrators were free to express their personal feelings about climate action through signs and chant, much of their activity was under the direction the Fridays for Future organization. This Friday strike has a special significance to the youth of the world. It is the day of the week that the sixteen year old activist, Greta Thunberg started skipping school in order to protest the lack of action taken to offset climate change in Sweden. Her persistence has prompted worldwide protest.
“For 25 years, countless people have come to the U.N. climate conferences begging our world leaders to stop emissions, and clearly that has not worked as emissions are continuing to rise. So I will not beg the world leaders to care for our future. I will instead let them know change is coming whether they like it or not.”
“For way too long, the politicians and the people in power have gotten away with not doing anything at all to fight the climate crisis … but we will make sure that they will not get away with it any longer.”
“She’s like the icon of our generation,” many of the New York protesters are reported to have stated. If so, she has a strange way of showing it. Definitely low-key in her self-expression, Thunberg is incredibly composed. When she speaks her words cut right to the quick. She is sharply focused at a time when most of our authorities are simply paralyzed. She activates the will of those who care about life on this planet. There’s never been anyone quite like her in human history. The closest example might be Jeanne d’Arc, but Greta Thunberg isn’t going to end up publicly betrayed by figures that cannot control her. She has the TRUTH TO POWER world press on her side.
