Last summer John Legend and Chrissy Teigan announced that they had a third child on the way. They had even chosen Jack as his name. Then a few months later it was reported that Chrissy had suffered a 20 week miscarriage and the couple was experiencing a great deal of grief. They shared their most intimate photos of this painful event as something that had happened to them, but that most people keep hidden as a deeply felt and private wound.
Miscarriage is such an obscured process that we don’t realize that it is normal and occurs in at least 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies. Mayo Clinic informs us that the actual number of “spontaneous abortions” may be higher because many occur early on and are not recognized. It is commonly thought that miscarriages are caused by mother’s carelessness, but most occur because the fetus is unable to develop normally. Teigan suffers from a medical condition known as “weak placenta” which has presented her difficulty during her two previous pregnancies.
“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” Teigen wrote in her Instagram post. “We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”
Spontaneous abortion is rarely mentioned, let alone discussed on the media. But when masses of people are following every detail of their lives, the decision of John Legend and Chrissy Teigan was to remain honest and open about their sadness. Currently Teigan herself is receiving harsh criticism, not only about her “oversharing” her experience but about her personal political positions. Aggressively deranged people are using her unfortunate situation to rant on about “voluntary abortions” which still remain a legal right of American women.
Recently Teigan has squared off against QAanon and she claims to have blocked at least 1 million Twitter followers for harassment. Now her unfortunate situation is being used against her. “I don’t trust you or believe you,” one Instagram user said. “I think you sacrificed your child to someone higher. You and your husband shouldn’t have sold your souls to the deep state.” Teigan, who is followed by more than 13 million followers on Twitter and about 30 million on Instagram, has announced that she is stepping back from stresses of the social media.
