Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin met last week in Geneva, Switzerland. And it was the handshake between these two important men that received the greatest attention around the world. Of course, it is difficult for the average person to comprehend the complexities of foreign affairs, whereas a symbolic gesture has a simple meaning. The interpretation of this social gesture is fairly consistent regardless of who you are and where you are from. The practice of shaking hands is extremely old and means to give your trust to someone.

The actual purpose of the 2021 Summit was to reestablish ties between the USA and the USSR. Not everyone thought a “face to face” was a great idea because it would give legitimacy to Putin who is a dictator with a devastating human rights record. It would allow him to perpetuate the lies which disguise his true intentions. But we were also reminded that a Summit would allow Putin to be publicly confronted by the truth in a very open and effective manner.

Keep in mind that the outcomes of the meeting were not anticipated to be spectacular. “We’re not expecting a big set of deliverables out of this meeting,” a senior US official told reporters. “I’m not sure that any agreements will be reached,” said Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov. Still Biden and Putin agreed as the Summit ended that the talks had been “constructive and positive.” What they meant was that very little damage had occurred.

Maybe the best thing that came from this meeting was a joint statement by the two leaders, “A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought” — echoing former President Ronald Reagan, Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, and their 1985 summit in Geneva. It’s too bad Biden and Putin could not issue a similar policy decree regarding the impeding Climate Change. It is also is a dangerous situation that requires cooperation to keep the world habitable for all.
