It’s the Right Fit

Last week Mike Richards was selected as permanent host for the daily game show Jeopardy. He replaces Alex Trebek, who had held this position for 37 years. For a short time it was thought that Trebec’s permanent replacement would be Ken Jennings who holds the record for the longest winning streak on Jeopardy and the highest average correct responses per game in Jeopardy history. Jennings appeared to be Trebek’s personal favorite, but the makings of a champion contestant are not the same qualities required for an award winning game show host.

Alex Trebec is difficult to replace, not only for his skills as a host, but as an exemplary individual. His death was no shock to any one who followed Jeopardy. He announced back in 2019 that he had pancreatic cancer and would host the show, while taking chemo, for as long as possible. That he did and he will be missed for more than just Jeopardy. Trebek, as might be expected of a person of his stature, was a spokesperson for any number of humanitarian causes.

Ken Jennings stated  “What was great about Alex was we didn’t know anything about him: He came into our homes every night and he hosted ‘Jeopardy!,’” He added “Today, it’s very hard to find a broadcaster whose priors and opinions you know nothing about.”
Yes, it’s all about the game and the players, not about the host.

Mike Richards is hopefully the right fit. Richards is currently the show’s executive producer. He joined the management team in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. Previously he spent nearly a decade as the executive producer of The Price is Right and Let’s Make a Deal. Richards is expected to be involved in strategizing how to keep the show going into the future. Jeopardy still still averages 8.8 million viewers a week, according to Nielsen and last year, it was judged that about four viewers out of five were over age 55. That’s a rather specific audience.

Mayim Bialik, an actress and neuroscientist, was chosen to host the show’s prime-time spinoffs, She is scheduled to host the Jeopardy  National College Championship next year on ABC. She is not everyone’s favorite due to her outspoken opinions regarding sexual assault. Also considered for these two host positions were: Katie Couric, Aaron Rodgers, Robin Williams, LeVar Burton, George Stephanopoulos, Anderson Cooper, and Dr. Mehmet Oz. Our Dayology Analysis agrees that a good choice was made, and pretty much how it actually happened.

Mike Richards was born on a Saturday in the sign of Cancer. Saturn rules his Inner Self and his Outer Self is governed by the Moon. Those born with the #76 SAT CAN Dayology Signature tend to be responsible to the groups to which they are associated. Generally it is a genetic family to which they are attached, but “family” these days can be extended to any group of people who feel particularly close to one another. Being one of millions watching the same game show night after night, year after year, could easily create within viewers a feeling of group relatedness. This Cancer personal quality earned Richards the prime Jeopardy position.

Mayim Bialik was born on a Friday in the sign of Sagittarius. Venus rules her Inner Self and her Outer Self is governed by Jupiter. Those born with the #69 Dayology Signature tend to see the humor in life and enjoy being helpful toward others. It appears that Bialik was denied the daily Jeopardy slot because she could not produce the “tone” to which a more sedate audience was accustomed. After having been chosen an “ambassador” for the leading brain health supplement, Neuriva, it makes perfect promotional sense to offer Bialik the opportunity to assemble her previous “brainy” Big Bang viewers for more updated Jeopardy experience.
