That Illegal Marriage

This week R. Kelly, the multiplatinum R&B artist, was found guilty on nine counts and faces life in prison. He was convicted of federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges for a decades-long scheme to recruit underage girls for sex and produce child pornography. “John Doe” or “Jane Doe” is the term used when the name of a victim is unknown or to prevent the use of the true name of a victim in court. From the beginning of this trial it was clear that the identity of Jane Doe1 was the deceased singer, Aaliyah Haughton. She may not have been first female exploited by R. Kelly, but she was the only one that he married illegally for nefarious purposes.

It all started with a two year work relationship during the recording of Aaliyah’s debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number. It was stated at the trial that Kelly married Aaliyah when he was 27 and she was 15 so that she could obtain an abortion with his legal consent. The judge who officiated the secret wedding ceremony on August 31, 1994 noticed nothing unusual about the event. It was just two people in matching jumpsuits in a hotel suite located near the Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. He claims that he was unaware that the bride was under age and that the groom, a famous performer, had bribed a government employee to provide her a fake ID.

By February 1995 Aaliyah’s parents had made certain that the marriage was annulled. Her ties with Kelly were cut and the two never worked or were again seen together publicly. Whatever else that may have occurred during this wild-ride of a relationship will never be known, because Aaliyah tragically died in an airplane crash when she was only 22 years old.  Aaliyah’s mother, Diane Haughton claimed that everything “that went wrong in her daughter’s life” began with Kelly. His prosecutors alleged that Kelly only married Aaliyah to protect himself from possible criminal charges, because a wife cannot be forced to testify against a husband.

Kathy Indolini, author of Aaliyah, Baby Girl: Better Known As Aaliyah, states that it was not her original intention to give much space in her biography to the role R. Kelly that played in Aaliyah’s short existence. As the information about his crimes came out she changed her mind. This popular hip-hop author and popular culture journalist claims that the “ultimate power” of the music industry is sales. Financial success depends upon the attitudes of it’s prominent members and perceptions of its listeners.

“I hated reading some of the material for the book — but you can’t leave it out.
If you do then you’re denying that part of their story. You can’t say someone
was strong and resilient if you don’t explain what made them that way.
The realizations and the things that we overlooked for so long involving some of
the pain and the heartache that she had to endure are difficult. I didn’t want to
make it the focal point of the book or even talk about it much but I did want
to make sure everyone understood that she put up with a lot. But that all adds
to the fact that she was a once-in-a-lifetime human and artist.”
