This week R. Kelly, the multiplatinum R&B artist, was found guilty on nine counts and faces life in prison. He was convicted of federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges for a decades-long scheme to recruit underage girls for sex and produce child pornography. “John Doe” or “Jane Doe” is the term used when the name of a victim is unknown or to prevent the use of the true name of a victim in court. From the beginning of this trial it was clear that the identity of Jane Doe1 was the deceased singer, Aaliyah Haughton. She may not have been first female exploited by R. Kelly, but she was the only one that he married illegally for nefarious purposes.
It all started with a two year work relationship during the recording of Aaliyah’s debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number. It was stated at the trial that Kelly married Aaliyah when he was 27 and she was 15 so that she could obtain an abortion with his legal consent. The judge who officiated the secret wedding ceremony on August 31, 1994 noticed nothing unusual about the event. It was just two people in matching jumpsuits in a hotel suite located near the Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. He claims that he was unaware that the bride was under age and that the groom, a famous performer, had bribed a government employee to provide her a fake ID.
By February 1995 Aaliyah’s parents had made certain that the marriage was annulled. Her ties with Kelly were cut and the two never worked or were again seen together publicly. Whatever else that may have occurred during this wild-ride of a relationship will never be known, because Aaliyah tragically died in an airplane crash when she was only 22 years old. Aaliyah’s mother, Diane Haughton claimed that everything “that went wrong in her daughter’s life” began with Kelly. His prosecutors alleged that Kelly only married Aaliyah to protect himself from possible criminal charges, because a wife cannot be forced to testify against a husband.
Kathy Indolini, author of Aaliyah, Baby Girl: Better Known As Aaliyah, states that it was not her original intention to give much space in her biography to the role R. Kelly that played in Aaliyah’s short existence, but as the information about his crimes came out she changed her mind. This popular hip-hop author and popular culture journalist realizes that the “ultimate power” of the music industry is sales. Financial success depends upon the attitudes of it’s prominent members and perceptions of its listeners.
|“I hated reading some of the material for the book — but you can’t leave it out. If you do then you’re denying that part of their story. You can’t say someone was strong and resilient if you don’t explain what made them that way. The realizations and the things that we overlooked for so long involving some of the pain and the heartache that she had to endure are difficult. I didn’t want to make it the focal point of the book or even talk about it much but I did want to make sure everyone understood that she put up with a lot. But that all adds to the fact that she was a once-in-a-lifetime human and artist.” ~ Kathy Indolini|
#10 SUN CAP
#84 SAT PIS
R. Kelly was born on a Sunday in the zodiac sign of Capricorn. The Sun is the ruler of his INNER self and Saturn governs his OUTER Self. Those with the #10 SUN CAP Dayology signature are tremendously powerful and strong. They feel pushed to carry out their desires and if force is what it takes to get what they want, they will seriously consider that option.
Aaliyah was born on a Tuesday in the zodiac sign of Capricorn. Mars is the ruler of her INNER Self and Saturn governs her OUTER Self. Individuals with the #34 MAR CAP Dayology Signature are also driven to achieve, but they generally do not attempt to manhandle anyone. It is true that sometimes their actions may cause incidental injury or harm to others.
Kathy Iandoli was born on a Saturday in the zodiac sign of Pisces. Saturn is the Ruler of her INNER Self and Jupiter or Neptune governs her OUTER Self. People with the #84 SAT PIS Dayology Signature have the capacity to understand the difficulties of the world in a fairly transcendent manner. Their personal lives make little sense until they use this gift.
Kelly and Aaliyah both have Capricorn as their Sun Sign, but their Day Rays are different. They sensed each other’s strength and drive, but Kelly wanted to rule everything while Aaliyah just wanted to develop herself. Kelly may have used their Saturn energy to push and bully his protégée into an inappropriate mentor relationship. It is not clear how badly he treated Aaliyah while they were involved, but her best personal interests were not a part of the deal.
Kathy Iandoli’s Saturday Day Ray has a strong connection with Capricorn. While she has the capacity to depict the destructive union of R. Kelly and Aaliyah in words, she wisely did not promote the unhealthy behaviors that fed that situation. Her Pisces Sun Sign lets her witness the interactions of light and dark of the world, without actually being a hard player herself.
