Who doesn’t wish new parents the very best? Most of us see the entry of infants into this world as a blessed event. Still there are some folks who would use this wonderful occasion to insult and degrade other individuals. And that is exactly what happened last week.
U.S. Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg adopted twins August. To assist with the care of their newborns, Buttigieg took four weeks of paid parental leave, a benefit that most new parents appreciate. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki informed reporters “He’s at work, I was on a conference call with him this morning.” She added said, “I think what you’re getting at here is this question about whether men, parents, women should have paternity and maternity leave. And the answer is absolutely yes.”
On a previous Fox News broadcast Tucker Carlson had announced “Pete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child. Paternity leave, they call it, trying to figure out how to breastfeed. No word on how that went.” The remark was not considered funny by everyone in Carlson’s conservative audience. Actually many viewers felt it was meanspirited. Some even recognized it as homophobic. And there were those who knew that it was absolutely hypocritical because Fox News offers six weeks of paid paternal leave to all its employees.
Right after that Candace Owens, a popular Fox News political commentator, called Buttigieg “sickeningly pathetic” for taking time off during the transportation crisis. To correct the record — it is reported that Buttigieg kept in touch with the office and made a number of public appearances and statements while on leave. But no matter. The exact words voiced by Owens were “Privileged times have produced the weakest men that have ever lived in America. Remove this little boy from office. Then she tweeted with the hashtag #BringBackManlyMen.
Buttigieg promptly appeared on Deadline Whitehouse, the MSNBC afternoon show hosted by Nicolle Wallace. In a brief interview he stated “I’m not going to apologize to Tucker Carlson or anyone else for taking care of our premature newborn twins.” “As you might imagine, we are bottle feeding and doing it at all hours of the day and night,” he added. “… I guess he just doesn’t understand the concept of bottle feeding, let alone the concept of paternity leave.”
Quite effectively Pete Buttigieg referred to Candace Owens as “anyone else.” Still there really aren’t any questions about her personal positions on race and gender. POLITIFACT gives her high marks for false remarks in her books and appearances. And back in 2018 she started Blexit, an effort to get black voters to leave the Democratic Party. Sometime in the future she may consider a run a Republican office having been YouTube tested and Trump Approved.
