Jemima and Diana

The Crown is a Netflix television series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Despite some deliberate inaccuracies this Netflix series has been been praised by critics and enjoyed by millions of viewers. This week Jemima Khan stepped away from her role as a consultant.

Khan left the production due to the insensitive manner that the show was portraying her close friend, Princess Diana, particularly in her romances with British-Pakistani surgeon Hasnat Khan and Egyptian film producer Dodi Al-Fayed.  Jemima Khan is the former wife of Hasnat’s distant cousin Imran Khan,

Khan explains “In 2019, Peter Morgan asked me to co-write on the fifth series of The Crown, particularly those episodes which concerned Princess Diana’s last years before she died. After a great deal of thought, having never spoken publicly about any of this before, I decided to contribute.” She continued “It was really important to me that the final years of my friend’s life be portrayed accurately and with compassion, as has not always happened in the past. When our cowriting agreement was not honoured, and when I realized that particular story line would not necessarily be told as respectfully or compassionately as I had hoped, I requested that all my contributions be removed from the series and I declined a credit.

Netflix replied to the Times, “Jemima Khan has been a friend, fan and a vocal public supporter of The Crown since season 1. She has been part of a wide network of well-informed and varied sources who have provided extensive background information to our writers and research team — providing context for the drama that is The Crown.” It was asserted that Jemima was never contracted as a “writer” on the series, and the decision to leave was strictly her own.

Jemima Khan and Diana Spencer were friends since 1996 when they met in Lehore, the capitol of the Pakistani province of Punjab. Diana was helping Jemina and Imran Khan, who was then Prime Minister of Pakistan, raise funds for a children’s cancer hospital. Diana also visited the family of Hasnat Khan, a American physician and cousin of Imran Khan on these two trips. Supposedly she was loved by Hasnat’s relatives but in the end he decided that his relationship with Diana could not work out primarily because the press would interfere with his career.

No doubt they recognized that the two of them shared a great deal beyond their personal beauty and developed gifts. Both women had privileged yet disjointed childhoods. Both experienced arranged marriages and divorce after their husbands cheated on them. Both raised two sons to whom they were very dedicated.
