It all started when U.S. Rep Lauren Boebert spread the story that she mistook fellow Rep Ilhan Omar for a terrorist while entering the U.S. Capitol. This situation was at the very least prompted by the hijab (religious head covering) that Omar wears when she is in public. At the root of Boebert’s inappropriate behavior is an unfounded and growing prejudice against the followers of Muslim religion currently being identified as Islamophobia .

Lauren Boebert‘s behavior was obviously Islamophobic. She claims that she was getting into an elevator when a visibly disturbed Capitol Police officer ran toward her. The doors closed too quickly for her to make out his intention. Immediately she realized that she was standing next to her fellow representative Ilhan Omar. Boebert appeared to feel uncomfortable because she states that she thought: “Well, she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine.” Then she demeaned Ms. Omar: “Oh look, the Jihad squad decided to show up for work today.”

Ilhan Omar reports that the elevator encounter never took place. It is an insensitive story manufactured and spread around for her supporters. While jokes about backpack bombers and holy wars may be relatively common; they are also incredibly destructive. These casual remarks can push disturbed people to act irresponsibly. For instance, within thirty minutes of Boebert’s comments, the following death threat was sent to Omar’s phone:

“We see you, you Muslim sand n*****
b****,” the voicemail began. “Don’t
worry, there are plenty who would love
the opportunity to take you off the
face of this f****** earth.” The caller
continued. “You will not live much
longer b****, I can almost
guarantee you that.

According to Ilhan Omar, her colleague refuses to acknowledge the effects of her vicious comments. Ilhan has stated “I graciously accepted a call from Rep. Lauren Boebert in the hope of receiving a direct apology. She instead doubled down on her rhetoric and I decided to end the unproductive call.” Omar added “I believe in engaging with those we disagree with respectfully, but not when that disagreement is rooted in outright bigotry and hate.”

The Insider reports that the heightened climate of Islamophobia on Capitol Hill has prompted U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley to call for the stripping of Rep. Boebert’s committee assignments. While Pressley is not a Muslim, she remarks “Instead of engaging in a good faith discussion on how to address the rise of Islamophobic violence, Republicans engaged in ad hominem attacks, belittled Muslims, and minimized the pain of Muslim communities around the world.”
