A Clear Voice

A month ago no one knew what to think when Russia began amassing troops and military equipment along the Ukrainian border. The people of Ukraine did not react immediately as they were accustomed to being fired upon by their neighboring country. Most of the world experts thought that Russian President Putin was bluffing because the consequences of an actual attack were too dire to even be considered. A third world war must be avoided at all costs.

Among those knowledgeable of Russian affairs, the clear voice of Michael McFaul stands out. Unfolding events are proving his instincts concerning the Ukrainian Conflict to be correct. Not only is he intimately acquainted with this part of the world, he feels that he understands the motivations of Vladimir Putin. As shown on the list below McFaul is speaking out on a wide group of media platforms. And it’s clear that he will have more to say until this matter is settled.

What provides Michael McFaul with his insights? From 2012 to 2014 he served as the United States Ambassador to Russia. Before that he worked for the U.S. National Security Council as Special Assistant to the President, who at the time was Barack Obama. He is currently the Director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He has authored a good number of popular books and appears on a wide variety of media platforms. Oh, and McFaul is on the Kremlin’s sanction list of people who are not allowed to enter Russia!!!

McFaul and Putin are quite aware of each other’s power and influence. They have not only met but they have found themselves at complete odds. McFaul’s latest book, From Cold War to Hot Peace, relates how Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian tax auditor, was jailed and killed for discovering a $230 million dollar government fraud. He was a supporter of the Magnitsky Act which President Obama signed it into law. The bill, which applies globally, authorizes the U.S. government to sanction human rights offenders, freeze their assets, and ban them from entering the U.S.

In our Dayology Analysis for this week, we are investigating Michael McFaul’s longtime and almost perverse fascination with Vladimir Putin. There appears to be a connection between these two world figures that only be explained as the directive “follow the stars.”
