This week the focus of the January 6th hearings was the role of former, Vice President, Mike Pence in the events of that terrifying day. It detailed the pressure put on him by then President Donald Trump and the Capitol rioters to overturn the election.
According to the U.S. Constitution the Vice President counts the electoral ballots cast in presidential elections. The procedure takes place within the U.S. Capitol on January 6th after each national election. Ordinarily this event is simply a formality. January 6th 2021 was different because President Trump had no intention of leaving the White House. He was secretly planning a conspiracy that would allow him to serve another four years even though his opponent, Joe Biden had won the election fair and square. It was Trump’s intention to implement The Eastman Memo which erroneously stated that U.S. Vice President had the authority to reject certified State electors and nullify an election producing an outcome in his own party’s favor.
The plan depended upon the complete cooperation of Mike Pence. The Vice President spent hours with his staff studying the laws which govern these proceedings. He also met with Senate parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, to better understand his part in the election. Then he consulted Paul Ryan, a previous speaker of the House and a former Vice President, Dan Quayle. Both agreed that he did not have the power to overturn an election. It wasn’t until he contacted retired judge J. Michael Luttig that he learned that by complying to President Trump’s demands, he would most certainly committing a crime.
The fact that Mike Pence fulfilled his official duties on January 6, 2021 would have been an unremarkable event except that a crowd of 120,000 had shown up at the Capitol by Trump’s invitation. The number was 6 times greater than the Secret Service had expected and more than a dozen extremist groups were represented. Trump was reported to be very happy with the turn-out and spent the afternoon in front of his television watching the crowds break into the nation’s capitol and chant “Hang Mike Pence” as they forced their way from chamber to chamber.
The crowds were only 40 feet away as Vice-President was whisked to an undisclosed location. It was suggested that he should leave the scene entirely, but Pence refused. Instead he got to work checking on the security of fellow legislators. Then he, with General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, mobilized the National Guard. Orders were given to Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to release the 340 D.C. National Guardsmen that she had on standby. By 8 pm Pence reconvened the Senate and everyone got back to the nation’s business. At 3:40 a.m. the next morning Biden’s 2020 victory was declared.

Littig expressed that he was glad that Mike Pence had sought him out. Both were concerned about how the latest national election was being handled. As a result of their interaction Pence decided to resist President Trump’s demands regardless of the costs. This decision to “do the right thing” was very likely prompted by an unconscious recognition of their mutual Sun Day Rays.
