Last Tuesday the Japanese people honored the life of Shinzo Abe. The mourners in the streets chanted “Abe san!” as a motorcade transported his body to a downtown Tokoyo temple. “San” is the traditional title used to address individuals with high status in a respectful manner.

Shinzo Abe was shot on July 8th, 2022 while delivering a campaign speech. He was running for the office of Prime Minister of Japan, a position which he held twice before from 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020, making him the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history. The present ruling coalition (LDP) led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will remain in power for three more years. Kishida announced that a state funeral would be held for Shinzo Abe this autumn to show Japan’s “determination not yield to violence and to resolutely defend democracy.”
The incident took place in the small town of Nara about 300 miles from Tokyo. The assassin, Tetsyua Yamagami, used a homemade firearm to shoot Shinzo Abe in the back. Yamagami admitted “I knew that if I aimed and shot at former Prime Minister Abe, I might die, but I just couldn’t forgive the Unification Church, so I shot him with a shotgun.” His original intention was to kill Hak Ja Han, one of the founders of The Unification Church, because his family had gone bankrupt by his mother’s donation of their family property. Tomihiro Tanaka, the chairman of the Japanese branch of the South Korean church, stated defensively that neither Abe or Yamagami belonged to the Church, but that Yamagami’s mother did attend meetings.
The shooter claimed that former Prime Minister Abe supported the Family Federations Universal Peace Foundation (UPF) as The Unification Church is now called. “In a video shown on a big screen at the meeting of the UPF, Abe praised its work toward peace on the Korean Peninsula and the group’s focus on family values. An emphasis on traditional, paternalistic family systems was one of Abe’s key positions.” It has been revealed that the ties between the Unification Church and Abe’s family go back several generations. His grandfather, Nobusuke Kishi, who served as Prime Minister of Japan from 1957 to 1960, appears to have been responsible for bringing the Unification Church religion to their country from South Korea.
The Unification Church was established in 1954 by Sun-Myung Moon who was born in North Korea while it was under Japanese rule. We are just discovering the impact of the UPF particularly in US politics. Reverend Moon is credited by President Ronald Reagan for helping to win the Cold War. Moon During the 1972 Watergate Scandal church members prayed in support of Nixon on the U.S. Capitol Steps. Then in 1995 ex-president George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara shared the stage with Hak Ja Han Moon at the Tokyo Dome stadium. In 2006 it was revealed one of Moon’s many foundations had contributed $1 million to Senior Bush’s presidential library using the Greater Houston Community Foundation as a cover. Recently several prominent Republicans including Pence, Pompeo, Gingrich and Esper spoke at at a UPF “Rally for Hope. We have also learned that in 2021 Hyung Jin “Sean” Moon, the youngest son of the Reverend Moon, campaigned for Donald Trump and attended the January 6th insurrection. Who knew any of this?
