The Decision is Hers

The marriage of Ken and Angela Paxton is at risk. He holds the office of Attorney General of Texas and she serves as a one of the thirty-one state senators. Up until recently this pair was flying high and often pictured holding hands in public, but trouble is brewing on the horizon.

This week the Texas House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton. He is suspended from the duties of his office over allegations of misconduct that included bribery and other abuses. The vote is certain to reveal the substantial divisions within the Republican Party of Texas, which largest, richest and most powerful state GOP party in the United State.  Paxton’s political future rests in the decision of the Texas Senate, which will conduct a trial this August with the state senators acting as jurors and designated house members performing as impeachment managers. Removing Paxton from office and barring him from holding future elected office requires the support of two-thirds of the Texas senators.

It’s not as if we don’t have a clue as to what is going on in Texas politics. It’s a mess from top to bottom and Paxton’s irresponsible actions are pretty typical. Five years ago he was indicted on felony securities fraud charges which he has never faced in court. He is accused of persuading investors to buy stock without disclosing that he was to compensated for it. And more recently four whistleblowers were fired after testifying in a federal investigation about Paxton’s behavior. Lead counsel for the investigating committee, Erin Epley stated “Interviews show that they wanted to be loyal to General Paxton and they tried to advise him well, often and strongly, and when that failed each was fired after reporting General Paxton to law enforcement.”

The most compelling question in regard to the upcoming trial is if state senator Angela Paxton will vote on his matter. One of the twenty articles of impeachment against her husband involves a bribery charges related to an extramarital affair of her husband with an aide to a another state senator. Mrs. Paxton has not indicated if she will recuse herself from voting either for or against her errant husband. This decision is hers to make and will be on record.
