New House Speaker

On Tuesday, October 25, 2023 Congressman Mike Johnson was elected Speaker of the House. He replaces Kevin McCarthy who only made it through nine months of his term. This shift in leadership usually only occurs every two years at the beginning of a new session of Congress.

Yes, Republican Kevin McCarthy is the first sitting House speaker in U.S. history to be voted out of office. On Saturday, October 2, 2023 McCarthy struck a needed deal with the Democrats to pass a 45-day stopgap funding bill to avert a federal government shutdown. Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz viewed McCarthy’s willingness to work with Democrats as a violation of an agreement that the two of them had made and exercised his current power to push McCarthy out of office.

After three weeks of total confusion as to who would lead House of Representatives, Republican Chairwoman Elise Stefanik nominated Mike Johnson, an obscure figure from Louisiana, for the empty office. Johnson was elected with the surprising vote of the entire Republican conference. Of course, all the Democratic members supported their House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, but they simply didn’t have the numbers to compete.

As Johnson’s personal history is gradually revealed, we learn that he is an evangelical Christian. Currently he is the cohost with his wife of Truth Be Told, a Christian podcast. In a recent Time Magazine feature Johnson was asked if he was a Christian Nationalist. He denied it, but insisted that the United States is a nation with “Judeo-Christian roots” at which “secular forces are chipping away.” As to his thoughts regarding the correct relation of church and state he explained “The founders wanted to protect the church from an encroaching state, not the other way around.”

Johnson is clearly a husband and father,
but he is mentally confused about human
reproduction. When in court he questioned
a medical professional “Do you support the
right of a woman who is just seconds away
from birthing a healthy child to have an
abortion?” and the witness stated that no
such thing would ever happen, Johnson
replied “Never happened in your practice,
ma’am, but it happens!”

Regarding Johnson’s life before politics, Johnson served as the senior legal counsel for what is now the Alliance Defending Freedom. Around this time he wrote that gay marriage should be banned and states should have sodomy laws. As a U.S. Representative Johnson has supported multiple pieces of legislation that would ban abortion nationwide and criminalize providers. Even the notoriously “Tea Party populist guy” Steve Bannon bragged on his War Room broadcasts that Johnson is “by far the most conservative speaker in the history of the country” and “one of the intellectual architects of pushing back on the stolen election.”

Ron Elving from PBS NEWSHOUR, reported that Jim Jorden was the pick of ex-president Trump for Speaker, but this nomination was aborted by Jorden’s abrasive nature. Tom Emmer, the House majority whip, was also a consideration, but Trump’s approval never cane through. Shortly after the election Geoff Bennett and Lisa Desjardins (also with The PBS NEWSHOUR) introduced the new House Speaker and discussed what he might try to accomplish in his new position. He showed up while the Republican Party had the majority in the Congress, but was helplessly held hostage by a selfish ex-president to regain his “get out of jail free” card. Johnson’s success as Speaker of the House depends upon the MAGA PARTY’s ability to remain strong in the upcoming 2024 national election year. How that works out is yet to be seen.
