The OceanGate Disaster

This week OceanGate CEO, Stockton Rush dove toward the scene of the 1912 Titanic wreckage at the bottom of the sea with four adventure seekers. On the way down, their submersible vehicle unexpectedly imploded taking the lives of Rush and his four passengers.

The most critical voice regarding the incident was James Cameron, deep-sea explorer and the director of 1997 film “Titanic.” Cameron claims that he warned OceanGate that the use of the Titan sub could lead to “catastrophic failure. And that’s exactly what happened.” The fact is that James Cameron is quite experienced in these matters. He has made a 33 dives to the Titanic site himself. In 2012 he also dove to the Mariana Trench — the deepest-known point on Earth, three times deeper than the Titanic wreck site in a 24-foot cylindrical submersible he spent seven years building. Cameron and others within the deep submergence community was concerned about the vessel’s safety. Cameron described OceanGate’s use of a carbon-filiment hull as “fundamentally flawed” and now he regrets not speaking out more strongly.

So who was aboard the Titan? According to a BBC report Stockton Rush was an American born into a family that made its fortune from oil and shipping. He went to good schools and graduated with bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Princeton University. At 19 he became the youngest pilot in the world to qualify for jet transport rating, the highest pilot rating obtainable. Since his dream of going to Mars was out of reach at the time, he switched to navigating the depths of our planet’s oceans. OceanGate is his privately owned company established to provide crewed submersibles for tourism, industry, research, and exploration. The exact cause of the Titan’s accident remains under investigation and the future of this company is uncertain.

Hamish Harding was a British businessman and chairman of Action Aviation, an international aircraft brokerage company with headquarters in Dubai, UAE. As a member of The Explorers Club, he visited the South Pole several times, descended into the Mariana Trench, travelled into space, and held several Guinness World Records. Harding was a founding member of the board of trustees of The Explorers Club, involved in many of the world’s most prestigious discoveries.

Another of the passengers, P.H. Nargeolet, had visited the Titanic wreck site a record 37 times on other more conventional vehicles. He stated that he was aware of the testing that Stockton Rush was having performed on his OceanGate vehicle. He had no problem with the protocols, yet the worst thing that could ever happen actually did take place while he was aboard.

Two of the passengers were related. Shahzada and Suleman Dawood. This father and son team headed a prominent Pakistani Foundation. Shahzada was a businessman, investor, and philanthropist. Suleman was nineteen years old and a University student in Glasgow, Scotland. Suleman was the only passenger on this adventure with any severe apprehensions, but he put aside his personal fears to let his father enjoy this once in a lifetime experience.
