“Roll Over and Play Dead” is a direct quote from political strategist, James Carville, when asked how the Democratic Party should respond to the range of governmental changes that Donald Trump is attempting make during his second term as U.S. President. This shocking statement only makes sense when you understand exactly how James Carville views politics.
During a recent Mediaite interview James Carville, was challenged to produce a counterstrategy to the drastic “streamlining efforts” of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Carville summed up his political perspective by saying “President Trump is hellbent on dismantling the federal government” and “there’s nothing Democrats can legitimately do to stop it, even if we wanted to.” He went on to remark that Democrats would be well advised to make no sudden moves while the current president and his party make an obvious mess of things.
And a mess it is! The governmental changes being attempted may not even be legal. Some say that Musk’s role in DOGE, the new Department of Government Efficiency, violates constitution principles and others claim that Trump’s sweeping changes exceed the scope of his executive authority. Hopefully the courts can sort out this mess as legal challenges are made regarding these new initiatives. The current political situation is clearly unprecedented.
Meanwhile Carville suggests that the Democratic Party take a break and allow the flaws of the Republican plans be seen and experienced by the American public. He compares his “Roll Over and Play Dead” strategy to Muhammad Ali’s famous “Rope-a-Dope” tactic in the infamous 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” fight against George Foreman. Ali simply leaned back against the ropes, absorbing the punches and wearing out his opponent before delivering a decisive knockout.
Any spectacular maneuver allowing this Trump’s administration to fail by its own efforts, is not likely to be adopted by the Democratic party. Conscientious critics will view it as WEAK for not opposing these inhumane policies and UNETHICAL for allowing the general public to actually suffer. But the truth is that the Republicans have the power and they are ready to use it.
