Unlikely Allies, United Cause

Every so often, an event disturbs the status quo and demands attention. Last summer, one such moment arose when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing New York’s District 14, teamed up with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders to campaign against presidential candidate Donald Trump. On the surface, they seem like an improbable duo, but their shared mission proved otherwise.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rose to fame in 2018 as the youngest woman elected to Congress at age 28. By 2024, at 34 years old, she remained a leading progressive voice, advocating for policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal. Raised in the Bronx and with a Hispanic background, she champions economic justice and environmental sustainability.

Bernie Sanders, Vermont’s senior senator, is 83 years old and has long been a champion of progressive causes. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, in a Jewish family of Polish descent, Sanders has dedicated his career to addressing income inequality. His democratic socialist vision reflects a lifelong commitment to reducing economic disparities and promoting equity.

As we all know, Donald Trump won the 2025 election and, with Elon Musk’s backing, is advancing huge changes to the American landscape, Their initiative seeks to reduce federal regulations, privatize public services, and emphasize states’ rights to reshape the federal government’s role. Its proposals include cutting environmental protections, restructuring entitlement programs, and shifting power to states, favors less oversight and greater corporate control.

In response, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have again joined forces to alert the public to sweeping changes under Trump’s second administration. Rather than saying, “We told you so,” they are highlighting the dangers ahead. Under the banner “Fight Oligarchy!” they are rallying against billionaire influence in government. “Well, when I talked about oligarchy over the years, I think for some people it was an abstraction,” Sanders disclosed in an interview with NPR. Now though, “people understand you have to be blind not to see that what we have today is a government of the billionaires, by the billionaires and for the billionaires.”
