Should demeaning expressions ever be used to make a political point? One would think not, but sometimes it happens that our “polite” vocabulary seems not to fit the situation.
Yesterday Bette Midler apologized for the comments that she tweeted about women being “Niggers.” She was dealing with the frustration that many Americans are experiencing regarding the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court appointment. Many were angered by the poor treatment of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford by the Senate Republicans. While efforts were made to appear they were “listening” to Ford, an investigation of her claims were denied to create the appearance that Kavanaugh had absolutely nothing to hide and needed to be appointed immediately.
Midler defended her use of the ‘N-word” pointing out that she was simply quoting the lyrics of the Yoko Ono and John Lennon song entitled “Woman is the N***er of the World, especially the lyrics “Raped, beaten, enslaved, married off, worked like dumb animals; denied education and inheritance; enduring the pain and danger of childbirth and life IN SILENCE for THOUSANDS of year. They are the most disrespected creatures on earth.”

It is understandable that society does not want the “n-word” used because it brings up and makes us face the mistreatment of the blacks in the world. Sometimes it’s hard not to use highly charged labels to express our continuing discontent. People are NOT treated equally in this world. What we need is a new vocabulary that reduces shock and hate toward particular groups, while promoting respect between individuals. And then we need to take direct action in facing down misogyny, racism, homophobia and everything else that sets one person against another.

Bette Midler and Yoko Ono were both born on Saturday, giving both Saturn as the ruler of their INNER selves. This Day Ray makes them serious at heart and harsh in their evaluations of people and events. It is their different Sun Signs, Sagittarius and Aquarius, and the rulers of their OUTER selves, Jupiter and Saturn, which create the major differences between the two.
Bette Midler was born on on a Saturday and in the zodiac sign of Sagittarius. Saturn is her Day Ray and Jupiter acts as her OUTER ruler. It is the natural good humor of Jupiter which causes Midler to horse around and act like a clown. She enjoys goading and shocking conservatives with her anything goes attitude and off-color language. Saturn values can create a stern evaluation beneath her comedy. She may be honest but can miss the point by being overmuch.
Yoko Ono is an Aquarius and has Saturn as her INNER and OUTER rulers, And, unexpected, Uranus may step in when the occasion demands. As a public personality she is reserved and unassuming. As a highly creative individual her natural expression is quirky or unexpected. She takes pride in her unique point of view and realizes that her truth may not be accepted by all.
Of the two women Yoko has probably faced the most adversity in her life. As explained in Yoko is Honored she fled from Hiroshima during the WWII bombing and survived the assassination of her husband and father of their child. Still Midler earned every bit of her success and has generously shared her extensive fortune for the benefit of others .
