Last Wednesday President Joe Biden gave his first presidential address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress. This tradition began in 1789 when George Washington delivered his first annual address in New York City, the nation’s capitol at the time. This speech is now called the State of the Union Address. A good measure of Biden’s attention was given to our efforts to recover from the pandemic and the “infrastructure” investments that the government could be making to improve our economy and the lives of our citizens. It’s not clear as to how these plans will be received by those who make the laws, but history was definitely made that evening.

Madam Vice President and Madam Speaker

As Biden took the podium he greeted the two women standing behind him with an respectful “Madam Speaker and Madam Vice President.” He then added,  “No president has ever said those words — and it’s about time.” He was referring to presence to the women to his left and right. Kamala Harris became Biden’s Vice President shortly after he promised to put a woman on his ticket. Pelosi assumed the leadership role of the first female House Speaker during the presidency of George W. Bush and after years of hard work. Together they hold the first and second positions in the line of presidential succession. Yes, it is a historic moment.
