The electoral system in the U.S. is currently a two-party system, meaning that the majority of the population cast their votes for candidates of one of two two distinctive political parties. However that does not prevent other parties from forming and running candidates in our elections.
So for the most part, our political candidates are Republican or Democrat. However it is a fact that in the early 1900’s The Socialist Party elected hundreds of local officials and state governors were elected from the Progressive, Reform, Farmer-Labor, Populist, and Prohibition parties. Since 1956 third-party candidates have never won a national election, but they can have the effect of spitting the vote. The most recent example is the Independent party run of Ralph Nadar inadvertently aiding Republican George W. Bush‘s win over Democratic Al Gore.
There are three third party candidates in the upcoming November election: Cornell West (People’s Party), Chase Oliver (Libertarian Party), and Jill Stein (Green Party). The fourth candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, has suspended his campaign and is backing Trump in return for a possible position in his administration. With a “anti-genocide, anti-war, pro-worker, and climate emergency” platform, this is Jill Stein’s third “go” for the highest position in the land.
This week Time Magazine reported that U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez put out the message that “How do I tell my friends who are Jill Stein voters they are wasting their time and effort?” AOC criticized Stein for running for president without winning and not trying to effect the local elections. “All you do is show up once every four years to speak to people who are justifiably pissed off, but you’re just showing up once every four years to do that, you’re not serious. To me, it does not read as authentic, it reads as predatory.”
Also this week on his daily radio talk show, Thom Hartmann, cautioned his listeners against voting for Jill Stein. He reminded them that this is an extremely close election and supporting Stein could cause the defeat of Kamala Harris in the same way that Ralph Nadar’s campaign spoiled things for Al Gore in 2020. Hartmann called Stein a “grifter.” The inference was that she runs for president to raise money with no intention of ever winning or changing anything.

This Dayology Analysis examines the lives of two political candidates and two well-known critics. Ralph Nader and Jill Stein both have put themselves up as independent presidential candidates. Their Dayology Signature rulers are entirely different. Their personal motivations are divergent as well. Ralph Nader was a consumer advocate and Jill Stein has a background in holistic medicine.
It is their strong Sunday and Tuesday Day Rays that have pushed these two individuals to take powerful action. It would be difficult for either one to stop trying to accomplish what they have set out for themselves. However third party candidates, as qualified as they may be, do not have the “machinery” to win national elections, but they can effectively push “their causes.”
Likewise the two critics, Tom Hartman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have extremely different Dayology Signatures and their individual life choices reflect that fact. Hartmann is the host of the number one progressive talk radio show and Ocasio-Cortez is a leading left wing activist and U.S. representative for New York’s 14th congressional district. It is their understanding Monday and Friday Day Rays that make them popular figures whose personal views are quite influential. Hartmann’s Taurus Sun Sign makes him practical and the Libra Sun Sign Ocasio-Cortez is very concerned with fairness. And so we have the reasons why we should not vote for Jill Stern.
