A natal chart is a map of the sky at the time and place of an individual’s birth. This diagram contains the specific patterns which will “unfold” cyclically during one’s lifetime. It is thought that the birth chart “holds our purpose” for appearing on the planet here and now.
The location and exact time of the birth is necessary to create an accurate natal chart. This information is easily accessible if it was recorded on the birth certificate. Sometimes a family bible or a relative’s diary also reveals the time. If these sources are unavailable, most births are recorded as “vital records” at your hospital or state capitol. Today these records are being “computerized” and locating birth certificate information can be accomplished online.
Once the correct birth time and place has been established “the chart” is constructed. This procedure is fairly complex and in the past was always done manually. Today there are many astrological calculation services that do the work for a small fee but they do not “interpret” the symbols and patterns. There are also computer programs which construct a natal chart and cleverly piece together a rather “generic” report for any time and place of birth.

Nothing actually beats having your chart “read” in person by a trained astrologer. They are trained to present the birth chart according to the wants and needs of their clients. Even so astrologers tend to focus specifically on one aspect of astrology than others. For instance, an infant’s first chart is read quite differently than the tracking down the reasons for “ups and downs” of an adult’s vocational history. Many a teen could be helped along by an early explanation of their personal gifts or valuable abilities. Sometimes couples find it helpful to have their natal charts compared for compatibility and longevity.
When there is no record of the birth time available, and only the day is known, an experienced astrologer can attempt to “guess” the birth time. A large number of possible charts throughout the day of birth are calculated, then pertinent questions are asked of the individual regarding important events in their life. The astrologer chooses the chart which seems mostly likely to have created these happenings. This time consuming process is called “chart rectification” and used as the last resort for those without a birth time.
