One of the most unexpected speakers at the 2024 Democratic Convention was Stephanie Grisham. This former Republican spoke on Tuesday night before the headliners Michelle and Barack Obama. Not only was her appearance a surprise, what she said was unexpected.
Usually those working close to important people are loyal and protective. It is considered to be everyone’s benefit to only show the best sides of established royalty, highly placed executives and perspective political candidates. The absolute truth is that “nobody is perfect” but many public figures do not come close to resembling the images they wish to project.
From the beginning of his presidency Donald Trump was viewed as a someone different in this office. He was a New York City business man whose major enterprises had more than often not crashed and burned. He was married three times and known to like the ladies. We shouldn’t have been surprised to discover that he secretly nursed the diabolical inclinations of ruling the world.
The role of the U.S. Press Secretary is to provide daily briefings on the President’s activities and agenda. A balance must be found between the president’s personal position and the official acts that are being taken. Trump’s 2nd first Press Secretary, Sean Spicer was caught making public statements that were false right out of the starting gate. Over time Spicer was forced out by the relentless criticism of the press and comedians on Saturday Night Live.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders replaced Sean Spicer. As the daughter of former Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee. It was because she was unquestionably a Republican party loyalist, Sarah was chosen for the post. While she isn’t telling tales, Sarah became a trusted confident to Trump and advised him on everything from communications strategy to governmental policy. Sticking to the Trump’s party line no matter how questionable or false it was, her time spent at the podium was turbulent. In June of 2019 it was announced she was leaving to run as governor of Arizona.
One month later Stephanie Grisham replaced Sanders as Press Secretary. For several previously Grisham had served as the Chief of Staff and Press Secretary for the first lady, Melania Trump. Everyone, including Melania was excited about Stephanie’s promotion, “She has been with us since 2015 – @potus & I can think of no better person to serve the Administration & our country. Excited to have Stephanie working for both sides of the @WhiteHouse. #BeBest”
Grisham was the first White House press secretary to NOT hold no press conferences, opting to do interviews on conservative outlets. After nine months on the job she was replaced as press secretary by Kayleigh McEnany and returned to her former place on the First Ladies staff. She resign from this post on the day after the January 6th Capitol Riots. Her departure came about as she asked Melania Trump if a message could be posted indicating that there was no place for lawlessness in the Trump administration and she received an absolute no.
In so many words Stephanie Grisham speaks from having been a White House insider. Grisham published her first book, I’ll Take Your Questions Now: What I Saw at the Trump White House. “For nearly six years, I was as close to the Trump family as anyone could be. I saw everything. I saw it all. I saw so much that I forgot some of it until I started writing this book …” “He (Trump) used to tell me, ‘It doesn’t matter what you say, Stephanie — say it enough and people will believe you.’ But it does matter. What you say matters. And what you don’t say matters.”
“The first thing I’d say about why I stayed is that working in the White House had been my lifelong dream. Being White House press secretary, for any president was my greatest career ambition. I thought of how proud my grandpa would be. He had worked in the Ronald Reagan administration and was one of the few men in my life who looked out for me and I loved and admired. I had a change to go and serve my country -probably the only chance I’d ever get – and I took it. No regrets there. Grandpas would have my back.”
This week Stephanie Grisham revealed to the Democratic Convention. “I wasn’t just a Trump supporter, I was a true believer.” She claimed that she spent Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida retreat and that she had seen Trump when the cameras were off. “Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters. He calls them ‘basement dwellers” and “On a hospital visit one time, when people were dying in the ICU, he was mad that cameras were not watching him. He has no empathy. No morals.”

She wants everyone to understand that if Donald Trump was reelected he would use the office “for revenge and retribution and … policies that will affect our country for a very, very long time.”
